How It Works

Learn how CatchMyName domain backordering works. Search, monitor, and catch domains in three simple steps.

The Domain Expiry Lifecycle

Unlike traditional backorder services that only let you act on domains already expiring, CatchMyName lets you backorder any domain — even one that is actively registered. We monitor it continuously, and if it ever expires, we track it through every stage and catch it for you. Here is what that lifecycle looks like:

1. Active

The domain works normally. The owner can renew it anytime during this period. Most owners renew before expiry, so there is no guarantee an expiring domain will become available.

2. Grace Period (approximately 30–45 days)

The domain stops resolving (websites and email stop working). The owner can still renew at the normal registration price. Many owners renew during this period once they notice their services are down.

3. Redemption Period (approximately 30 days)

The owner can still recover the domain, but at a significant premium fee ($100–$300+). This is essentially a last-chance period. Fewer owners recover their domains at this stage due to the high cost.

4. Pending Delete (approximately 5 days)

The domain is queued for deletion and cannot be recovered by the original owner. This is when our system is on high alert, ready to register the domain the instant it becomes available.

5. Available

The domain is released to the public registry. First to register wins. Our automated system submits the registration request within seconds of release. If successful, the domain is yours.

How Our Backordering Service Works

1. Search and Place Backorder

Search for any domain — even if it is currently registered. Place a backorder and pay the registration fee plus our $99 service fee upfront. We start monitoring immediately.

2. Automated Monitoring

Our system begins monitoring the domain status through every lifecycle stage. You can track progress in real-time from your dashboard with our monitoring timeline.

3. Instant Registration

When the domain enters pending delete, our system watches second-by-second. The moment it is released, we submit a registration request immediately, maximizing your chances of success.

4. Domain Is Yours

If we successfully register the domain, it is immediately available in your dashboard. You can manage DNS, set registrant info, and transfer it to another registrar whenever you like.

Pricing

Each backorder includes two fees:

  • Domain registration fee: Varies by TLD (top-level domain). Covers one year of registration.
  • Service fee: A flat $99 per backorder for our monitoring and catch service.

If we cannot acquire the domain, you receive a full refund of both fees. Zero risk.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I backorder a domain that is currently registered?

Yes. You can backorder any domain, including domains that are actively registered. We will monitor it and attempt to acquire it if the current owner lets it expire.

Is success guaranteed?

No. Domain acquisition depends on factors outside our control. However, if we fail to acquire the domain, you receive a full refund.

How long does the process take?

It depends on the domain. An actively registered domain may take months or years to expire (if it ever does). A domain already in the expiry process could be available within weeks.

Can I cancel a backorder?

Yes. You can cancel from your dashboard at any time. The domain registration fee is refunded; the $99 service fee is non-refundable.
